I’m in Freiburg Germany for the week doing some stuff with the folks at the Kiepenheuer Institut für Sonnenphysik. It’s a pretty town.
One thing that stands out for me, in comparison to France, is that Germans seem to be as driven by, to use the French, a sense of conformité while the French seem to be driven by the notion of liberté. Honestly, I’ve never seen so many people wait patiently at a crosswalk when the light was red and there isn’t a car in sight – disciplined structure versus anarchic chaos.
